Spartan Shield Trophy

Spartan Shield Trophy

Role — Designer & Creative Director for Location Labs by Avast
Metal sculptor & fabricator — Larry Wayne Cockerill

Every quarter we'd get to nominate fellow Loco-Labbers for their excellence at "winning as a phalanx" and their overall radness. I was asked to design a trophy inspired by the classic Spartan shield, in collaboration with a super talented SF metal artist, Larry Wayne Cockerill. Conceptually, I wanted the shield to not only feel Spartan but also connect visually with the Location Labs brand.

Shield – cover

I simply flipped the outlined version of our logo and voila, a very Spartan-esque rectilinear shield pattern emerged. Upon defining the visuals for the shield, I collaborated with Larry over email and phone. After careful consideration and ideation, we decided to restrain the materials to solid bronze, with a minimalist base and stand.

The Location Labs mark combined semi-transparent color layers within a regular, balanced rectilinear structure. This juxtaposition of clean graphic shapes and lean, sans serif type with rich, jewel-like color conveyed the company’s approach to engineering as both a scientific and creative discipline.
